It's ALL that and a bag of chips... the 90s.

Haters relax.

I know the whole - 'I'm a kid of the 90s'/'top 10 of the 90s'/'You know you grew up in the 90s' thing(s) has been done before.

But this is my blog.  So I am doing it again, from my recollection because I was thinking about it today and writing in my head.

Driving to my parents' house always makes me think of the 90s.

I think it is because I haven't lived "at home" since I graduated high school in 2000.

Maybe it's because I am in the car for a while listening to the 90s on 9 and Lithium on Sirius.

Whatever the reason, the road trip always brings me back to the time before facebook... and the internet.

Here's what I remember:

Music – whatev – judge away.  I’m proud of my music choices.  I spent a lot of time in the car in the 90s.  My elementary school was 30 minutes away from my house and my high school was 45 minutes.  My best friend lived far… all my friends did… so anytime I hear this music I feel like I am on 376 on the way to Nicole’s J
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Blink 182
Ace of Base
Puff Daddy
Dave Matthews
The Real McCoy
Third Eye Blind
The Fugees
The Goo Goo Dolls
98 Degrees
Backstreet Boys
Hootie and the Blowfish
Dr. Dre
Deep Blue Something
Alanis Morrisette
The Verve
The Spice Girls

Brittany Spears

Fashion – my fashion list is limited because I was in Catholic school for all of the 90s – but here is what I recall (actually my fashion is still limited in a yoga pant uniform kinda way).
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Leggings… they’re back
Flannel Shirts
Scrunchies (they do spice up a pony)
Scrunchy Socks (they matched your clothes!)
Men’s jeans (for women)
Scorts (c’mon they were sensible!)
Pegging your pants
Baggy T-shirts
Those loop things for your baggy t-shirts
Jumpers and suspenders

Body suits (like of the gymnastics variety)

Wind pants

Parachute pants

Food – Keep in mind that although the idea of “organic” food came around in 1990 – it wasn’t until 2010 that law about calling things “organic” started getting enforced… 2010.  Wow… I thought this was just a blow off post – but thank you Wikipedia!
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Burger King (EVERYDAY after school) – special memories <3
School lunch – let me clarify lunch cost $2.  For $2 you could get the main lunch OR you could get ice cream (with sprinkles) and French fries.  I’ll let you guess what my 13 year old self chose every day.
Yellow Gatorade  (cringe)
Chewy Granola Bars

Pop Tarts

Fruit Stripe Gum

TV –now… The Scig sisters were not allowed to watch much tv and most of the tv we watched was snuck…
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Clarissa Explains it All
Alex Mack
Saved by the Bell
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
The Fresh Prince
Dawson’s Creek
Home Improvement
Full House
Boy Meets World
The X-Files

The News – Keep in mind… I was a teenager.  Before you get all crazy – this is what I REMEMBER –most of my time in the 90s was spent battling my sister for phone time (because – that’s right it was BEFORE CELL PHONES) and not watching the news.
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Clinton (whatever your political beliefs were in the 90s… that made for a great news story)
Germany Reunified (whatevs – I AM a history teacher)
Lorena Bobbit - BIG topic of discussion in 6th grade haha
NC-17 invented
Y2K (my parents still may have water from the stockpile)
The Soviet Union fell
The Mall of America opened
The ‘world wide web’ is invented (if you haven’t youtubed some commercials for the internet… do.it.now.
Amy Fisher, Mike Tyson, David Koresh, Nancy Kerrigan, Timothy McVeigh, Kurt Kobain (I’m wasn't even sure what all these people did at the time or how they were important)
The Animal Kingdom opened J
Hale Bop (and various groups that thought it was god, or the end of the world or something)
Woodstock, again
Viagra (remember all the commercials)
Nelson Mandela
Princess Di, Columbine, and lots of other bad stuff… I wasn’t really allowed to watch/hear about

The Gulf War

Other – this stuff didn’t fit in any of the other categories… but is still decisively 90s
That’s ALL that and a bag of chips.
I’m not proud of it, but it WAS all that and a bag of chips.
Leonardo DiCaprio
Slap Bracelets (which I recently saw making a comeback at my favorite jewelry store… AC Moore)
Discmans (and those tape things that allowed you to play your discmans through the car stereo)
Lisa Frank
Best Friend necklaces – wasn’t life easier when everyone just KNEW who your bff was – none of this backstabbing FB crap
Beanie Babies
Stick on earrings
Leaving ‘messages’ on pagers – you had to use a pay phone to listen to it

Most of my memories from the 90s are good ones.  It was a time before FB, online bullying, texting, and everyone having a cell phone.  It was a time when a boy had to call your house and ask to talk to you, we listened to the radio to wait for our favorite song to come on so we could ‘tape’ it.  My memories of driving my used mini-van, blasting the radio to some mad good Blink 182 jams leave me only with smiles… I feel like my lists are incomplete… and that I will continue to add to them as I keep thinking about them – especially on my way to my parents’ J

Hop on over to these blogs where - if they are lucky - I'll share this :)

You're bringing back some good memories! The 90s seem like they were just yesterday. It is scary to think that kids born in the 90s can buy alcohol! (When did I get so old?!)

Also, I am not proud that I wore stick-on earrings. I remember one time at school a little boy said that any one with green earrings was an alien! I was wearing green stick ons that day and my friend, who had pierced ears, said, "They're not even real earrings!" I was mortified. Not quite as bad if I had tissue fall out of my bra or something, but still pretty bad. :)

I love this! My friend and I were just discussing how we still listen to the same music we listened to in the 90s. Honestly, if I'm still listening to it (Still...not revisiting...STILL) this is probably what I'll be listening to for the rest of my life.

Check out the 90210 Slumber Party playlist on Songza. It's an afternoon dance party waiting to happen!

What a fun way to know somebody better. I am about fifteen ahead of you but I was still a fan of Dawson's, Dave Matthew's, Brittney, ( although in the 90's there were some little ones in my car and I frequently had a cassette of Raffi going on. :D)

Thanks for sharing.
